Bikes 4 Books

Kids reading with bikes

Bikes 4 Books

Encouraging a love of reading — one bike at a time

How It Works

1

Set a Reading Goal

Teachers set individualized reading goals for each 2nd and 3rd grade student based on their level and abilities.

2

Read to Enter

Students who meet their reading goal are entered into a drawing at their school. No purchase necessary — just read.

3

Win a Bike

Winners are drawn just before the last day of school and receive a brand-new bicycle — plus a helmet, provided by the Lodge this year.

Bikes donated in 2026

4 per school across all 8 Longview elementary schools

About the Program

Bikes 4 Books began about a decade ago with just two bikes donated to a single school on a rotating basis. Today, Longview Lodge donates bikes to all eight Longview elementary schools, making reading into a fun and rewarding competition for 2nd and 3rd graders.

About 66% of students in the Longview School District qualify as low income — for many of these kids, this is the only way they would get a bike. The Daily News featured the program in 2024.
